In Nghe An , pig intestines are a familiar dish, associated with rustic cuisine but very popular. Many famous restaurants in Vinh City such as Nghi Phu Ward or Dien Chau District are often crowded with customers because of dishes made from pig intestines, including xe dieu intestines - the part that is considered crispy and sweet when enjoyed.

However, when information about the possibility of fake xe duong intestines spreading on social networks, many diners began to doubt the origin of this dish. On the morning of May 8, at some large traditional markets in Vinh City such as Coi Market (Hung Loc), Quan Lau Market, Nghi Phu Market, when asked about xe duong intestines, the vendors were surprised and affirmed that there was no type of intestine with such a name.

Ms. Hoang Thi Anh - a pork butcher at Coi market confirmed: "I have been in the business of slaughtering and selling pork for nearly 15 years, but I rarely see intestines made from cigarettes. Each pig that is butchered only has small intestines, large intestines, stomach, liver, and intestines... I rarely hear people call it intestines made from cigarettes."

Mr. Le Van Quyet - a trader from Thanh Chuong district who is selling at Quan Lau market also said: "The quality of each pig's intestines is different, sometimes there are pigs with thick, crispy, clean small intestines that are commonly called "xe dua". But to be honest, that xe dua intestine is very rare, if there is one, it is kept for the family to eat and not sold."

Having slaughtered and traded pork for decades, Ms. Anh said she had never heard of the pipe's inner lining. Photo: TP

Contrary to the denial from small traders, at restaurants, intestines from a pipe often appear on the menu, and are popular with many people because they are considered delicious, crispy and different. Mr. Le Viet T. - owner of an intestine restaurant in Nghi Phu ward, Vinh city said: Gourmets who come to the restaurant often order intestines from a pipe because they are delicious, crispy and sweet. The price of intestines from a pipe is quite high, ten times higher than that of regular pig intestines, up to over 1 million VND/kg. We import intestines from acquaintances, if there is a story of fake intestines from a pipe, we have to wait for the authorities to have an official conclusion."

In Dien Thinh commune, Dien Chau district, pork intestines are quite popular. Nghe An people come to enjoy this specialty in large numbers and sometimes see intestines sold in Dien Chau district. However, most consumers trust that the intestines sold in Dien Chau district are of guaranteed quality because they are delicious, fragrant, and attractive when eaten, and these restaurants have existed for decades.

The contradiction between the reality at the market and the popularity in restaurants makes many people wonder: Is the pipe intestine popular in restaurants the real rare intestine, or is it just a common small intestine treated with chemicals to deceive the sight and taste?

Mr. Tran Minh T. - a diner in Vinh City shared: "I really like eating pork belly because it is crispy, sweet and different. But when I read the news that it might be soaked in chemicals to make it crispy, I was very worried and did not dare to eat it anymore."

These concerns are not unfounded. According to food safety experts, using industrial chemicals such as borax, formalin, or bleach to process pig intestines can cause serious harm to the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and even increase the risk of cancer if used for a long time.

Faced with this situation, consumers need to be more careful when choosing food. They should not consume animal organs of unknown origin, especially products with unusual signs such as being too crispy, white or lacking a distinctive smell. At the same time, they should choose processing facilities and restaurants that ensure reputation and food hygiene and safety.

Authorities also need to promptly investigate and clarify the truth about counterfeiting of cigarette butts and strictly handle any violations, in order to regulate the market and protect consumer health.
