Starting February 14, international visitors of all ages to Bali will have to pay an additional 150,000 rupiah (nearly $10) before entering or leaving Indonesia. According to Tjok Bagus Pemayun, head of the Bali Tourism Department, the new fee is “a one-time fee.” If visitors leave Bali to visit other provinces, they will not have to pay the tax again. But if they leave Indonesia and return, they will have to pay the fee again.
Indonesia's Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Made Ayu Marthini said the proceeds would be used to "establish a sustainable tourism industry" as well as improve waste management, preserve cultural sites, the local environment, and build quality infrastructure and transportation.
International visitors with diplomatic visas, temporary or permanent residence cards, family reunion visas, golden visas and students and workers are exempt from this tax when coming to Bali. These people need to apply for tax exemption at least one month before entering the country.
To pay the tax, visitors can visit the government ’s Love Bali website or download the Love Bali app before arriving. Visitors will be asked to enter information such as their passport number and arrival date. After paying, they will receive a QR code via email notifying them of the tax payment. This document must be presented upon arrival in Bali. Alternatively, visitors can choose to pay the new tax at a bank counter at Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport or Benoa Bali Port, but these two methods are not recommended by the government.
Payments can also be made when travelling in Bali through “terminals” such as hotels, travel agencies, tourist attractions – which have been registered in the Love Bali system. Guests need to pay this amount through electronic payment applications, not cash.
