The reason Nicole Kidman criticized director Martin Scorsese

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman (57) listed the directors she has worked with when receiving the American Film Institute (AFI) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Asked by Vanity Fair if there were any notable names Kidman still had her eye on, the Eyes Wide Shut star admitted she would love to work with director Martin Scorsese (81 years old) if he were to make a film with her in the lead.

"I've always wanted to work with Martin Scorsese if he made a film about women," Nicole Kidman told the newspaper.

Along with the Departed director, Kidman also named Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson and Michael Haneke as directors on her wish list to work with.

While Nicole Kidman did not explicitly say the criticism, Martin Scorsese has been criticized in the past for films with too many male characters, such as The God Father , The Irishman , Goodfellas , The Wolf of Wall Street ...

In 2011, Meryl Streep shared similar feelings about Scorsese in an interview with The Talks : "I would like Martin Scorsese to occasionally care about a female character, but I don't know if I'd live that long."

Martin Scorsese has defended his past choices, claiming that he tries to portray masculinity accurately in a way that everyone can understand.

"The movies I was making were often in a man's world , where women seemed to be secondary characters," he told Entertainment Weekly in the 1990s. "I thought the women in Goodfellas and Raging Bull were strong. But they weren't the ones in the ring."

During his decades-long career, the legendary director has only directed a handful of films with female protagonists, the first of which was nearly 50 years ago. Ellen Burstyn starred in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore , which was released in 1974 and earned her an Oscar nomination.

Scorsese's most recent project, Killers of the Flower Moon , features a strong female lead in Lily Gladstone, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Gladstone stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the film based on the book by David Grann.

Cathy Moriarty, Winona Ryder, Jodie Foster and Sharon Stone were also nominated for Oscars for their roles in Martin Scorsese films.

Nicole Kidman's latest film Babygirl , directed by Halina Reijn, received a six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024.
