According to Viettel's internal news site, on July 25, the Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to announce and award the decision to promote Mr. Tao Duc Thang to the rank of Lieutenant General. Viettel's Chairman and General Director was born in 1973, from Thanh Hoa , with a Master's degree in electronics and telecommunications.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang is the second leader of Viettel to hold the rank of Lieutenant General, after Mr. Hoang Anh Xuan, who held the position of General Director of Viettel from 2004 to 2014. Since 2014, this is the first time Viettel has had a leader with this rank.

Before holding the position of Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group, Mr. Tao Duc Thang held the positions of General Director at Viettel Networks Corporation and Viettel Global Investment Joint Stock Corporation.

Mr. Cao Duc Thang was promoted to the rank of Major General in January 2024. The early promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General is a recognition of the contributions of the leader and Viettel Group.

Earlier this year, Viettel announced that its consolidated revenue in 2024 would reach VND190,000 billion , up 10.3% compared to 2023. This is the highest increase in the industry, when VNPT announced a 7% growth and MobiFone saw a decrease in revenue. The group's budget contribution also increased by 12.3% to VND42,600 billion , making it one of the state-owned enterprises with the largest budget contribution.

In early July, at the first 6-month review conference of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Viettel's Chairman said that the group is participating in developing 9 out of 11 national strategic technologies identified in Decision No. 1311/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister.

The technologies developed by Viettel are: artificial intelligence, digital copy, virtual reality/augmented reality; cloud computing, quantum, big data; blockchain; next-generation mobile networks (5G/6G); robotics and automation; semiconductor chips; energy, advanced materials; cyber security; aerospace.
