On the morning of November 7, dozens of households in Xuan Thanh fishing village, Phu My Dong commune, Gia Lai province were stunned and heartbroken as they cleaned up the rubble after their houses were flattened by rising waves during storm Kalmaegi.

Dozens of coastal houses in Xuan Thanh fishing village were destroyed by rising sea levels. Some houses collapsed completely, leaving only the stairs, while many others had their roofs blown off by the storm.

Ms. Ho Thi Nhung sat like a statue on the steps. That was all that remained of the bungalow that only ten hours ago she had locked the door securely to evacuate to avoid the storm.

"This morning when I returned from the shelter, I was shocked because I couldn't find my house. Oh my god, the storm and waves have "swallowed" my house, now all that remains is this three-step staircase. Now, I don't know where my family will live, how can I have money to build a new house" - she said with tears in her eyes.

Living in this land for decades, occasionally encountering the threat of high tides and big waves, but never has Mrs. Ho Thi So been as scared as she saw this morning, her house had disappeared, leaving only the foundation and a pile of debris, in disarray.

"At midnight, when the south wind blew, people told each other that their houses had been destroyed by the waves. This morning, when I returned home, I saw this scene. I couldn't believe that in just one night, I suddenly had no home to live in anymore," Mrs. So sobbed.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Dinh Mai, another resident, said that all the people in the fishing village were evacuated to concentrated housing arranged by the commune. "The waves rose about 8 meters high, tearing off the row of houses in the fishing village. Then the south wind continued to destroy, tearing off the roofs," Mr. Mai added.

A representative of the local government said that in the immediate future, many police and army forces will be mobilized to help people clean up their houses. Currently, the locality is calculating the damage in this fishing village to provide immediate support to the people and propose long-term policies to help people overcome the consequences and stabilize their lives.
