Chelsea's match with Qarabag had a modest amount of play time. |
Chelsea had reason to feel unfairly treated after their trip to Azerbaijan. Despite taking an early lead thanks to Estevao Willian’s goal, Enzo Maresca’s team were still held to a 2-2 draw by Qarabag – the team considered the weakest in the tournament.
Manager Maresca made seven changes to the team that beat Tottenham last weekend, which caused Chelsea to play inconsistently. Defender Reece James complained about the quality of the pitch, but what angered fans the most was the way referee Sebastian Gishamer handled the game.
According to UEFA's official report, the ball only actually rolled for 46 minutes and 11 seconds, less than half of the total 98 minutes of play. With so many interruptions, Chelsea fans couldn't understand why the referee only added 8 minutes of added time.
Both teams used up all five substitutions, with Chelsea making three changes in the first half. Therefore, the eight minutes of added time were considered too little. The figure of "46 minutes of live ball" is shocking, especially when, according to statistics from The Guardian , the average ball is on the ball for 55 minutes in a Premier League match.
The draw leaves Chelsea in a difficult position in the race for qualification. The London club must now be near-perfect in their remaining fixtures, which include away trips to Atalanta and Napoli, and a home game against Barcelona.
