Huawei has just announced a new ultra-thin phone model called Mate 70 Air, which is considered a direct competitor to the iPhone Air line that Apple introduced in September. The product marks the Chinese technology group's latest effort in the fierce competition in the high-end phone segment.

The Mate 70 Air is 6.6mm thick and starts at 4,199 yuan ( $590 ), significantly lower than the $999 iPhone Air. While it doesn't have the same record-breaking thinness as its rival, Huawei's device still aims for a streamlined design experience, one of the main attractions of thin and light smartphones.

Apple first introduced the Air line's signature design to the iPhone this fall. Huawei's use of the same phrase for its new product is seen by analysts as a direct move to confront Apple, especially since the Mate 70 Air targets the same group of users who favor a light and thin design.

2025 saw a wave of fierce competition between Chinese phone companies and Apple. In particular, Xiaomi changed its name and accelerated the launch of the Xiaomi 17 series, focusing on high configuration and lower prices to attract iPhone users. However, new iPhone sales still increased in China compared to the previous year, showing that Apple's brand appeal has not shown any signs of decreasing.

Unlike many competitors who launch new devices as soon as Apple announces their products, Huawei chooses a slower time to perfect its strategy. The Mate 70 Air does not focus on outstanding performance but on design and convenience. The device is equipped with a 7-inch screen, stereo speakers and a 6,500 mAh battery, helping to balance between thinness and usage time. The device runs the HarmonyOS operating system developed by Huawei.

The Chinese tech giant has now opened pre-orders for the Mate 70 Air in its home market, with deliveries expected to start on November 11. The arrival of this phone shows that Huawei continues to assert its position, while maintaining its role as Apple's biggest rival in China.
