Elon Musk once predicted that Tesla's Optimus robots would become a force for economic good. In the long run, they could eliminate much of the need for human labor. But he has a bigger vision for them, wanting them to be a game-changer for the economy.
During the shareholders meeting on November 6, he repeatedly asserted that Optimus will truly eradicate poverty. “People often talk about eliminating poverty, providing good healthcare for all people. There is only one way to do that, through Optimus robots,” Musk said.
Tesla shareholders previously approved a $1 trillion compensation package for Musk, which would see him receive the shares if Tesla achieves a series of ambitious goals, including selling one million Optimus robots over the next decade.
Musk also said at the meeting that Optimus would change the lives of prisoners. Instead of physically holding them, Optimus could follow them and prevent them from committing further crimes.
During Tesla's third-quarter earnings call, Musk outlined his plans for a world of sustainable prosperity, with Optimus at the forefront. He predicted that each Optimus robot would be five times more productive than a human being each year, as they could operate 24/7, which would make society 10 or even 100 times more productive.
“AI has a certain limit in terms of enhancing human productivity, but it almost completely eliminates it when it is in human form,” Musk said, describing the future of robots changing the economy in a recent interview with Joe Rogan.
According to him, humans can choose whether or not to work with the presence of robots like Optimus. “In a positive scenario, we will have universal high income. Everyone can own any product or service they want,” Musk said.
Other tech experts around the world share the same view. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes that AI and automation will destroy many jobs, and has launched a pilot program for UBI in 2024. Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, and Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, have also expressed support for this model.
In its third-quarter earnings report, Tesla reported a 12% increase in revenue, but a 40% year-over-year drop in profits due to cost competition and lower prices for electric vehicles. Revenue from selling environmental credits to other companies, once a significant part of Tesla's profits, has dropped significantly.
Currently, the humanoid robot Optimus is having difficulty in production, especially the hands, and will not be released in the near future. Musk said he hopes that Optimus can be sold for $ 20,000-30,000 when it enters the mass production stage.
