On the morning of August 22, the round of 16 and quarterfinals of the professional men's singles of the PPA Asia Hong Kong Open ended with almost absolute victory belonging to athletes from Vietnam.
Three of the four semifinalists are familiar players who switched from tennis to pickleball. They are Truong Vinh Hien, Trinh Ling Giang and former number 1 Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam.
According to the competition bracket, the second semi-final pair is an internal clash between Trinh Linh Giang and Ly Hoang Nam. That means at least Vietnam has 1 spot in the professional men's singles final.
Semi-final 1 between Truong Vinh Hien and home player and number 1 seed Hong Wong Kit - also known as Jack Wong. Jack Wong is a familiar face in pickleball tournaments in Vietnam.
Jack Wong won 2 matches in Main Draw against Zefeng Li and Eunggwon Kim with the same score of 2-0.
Meanwhile, Ly Hoang Nam had an impressive victory over the second seeded Japanese player Kenta Miyoshi to secure a ticket to the semi-finals. He then defeated Jimmy Liong with the same score of 2-0.
Clashing with his friend Trinh Linh Giang, who is also the reigning champion of the men's singles event in Malaysia Open, Ly Hoang Nam has the opportunity to usurp the throne and affirm his name, although this challenge is not easy.
The two men's singles semi-finals will take place at 6:00 p.m. on August 23, Vietnam time.
The male players will continue to compete in men's doubles such as Hoang Nam/Linh Giang, or mixed doubles between Hoang Nam/Jolie Lam, Linh Giang/Connie Lee at noon on August 22.
