"When my father and sister passed away, I told myself that if I gave up, I would be letting down the care and expectations of many people for me. I had to be more determined. The scholarship was my arm and weapon," Vuong said about his days of depression and the results he had just achieved.

Assets are only determination, desire and youth

Tran Quang Vuong (former student of An Nhon Tay High School, Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City, school year 2022-2023) has just been awarded the "Wings of Dreams" scholarship by RMIT University Vietnam (RMIT Vietnam) this year.

Vuong is starting an English course to prepare for a university program in tourism and hotel management.

This annual scholarship covers full English and university tuition fees, a laptop and a monthly living allowance.

This is like a miracle for an orphan student who has encountered many difficulties in life.

Ms. Le Thi Lung, Vuong's 12th grade homeroom teacher, praised the poor student's will, determination and will to overcome all difficulties in life.

"At such a young age, Vuong had to struggle and struggle with life. Vuong's assets were nothing but determination and the desire to go to school. Dream after dream, desire after desire, Vuong wanted to step into the university to satisfy his passion for learning, to change his unhappy life and also to become a useful citizen for society in the future," Ms. Lung shared.

As for Vuong himself, the scholarship was like a helping hand to help him stand up amidst the ups and downs. Vuong burst into tears when he received the scholarship confirmation letter late at night.

"When I received the scholarship confirmation letter, I just wanted to run to my father's grave, share this wonderful news and thank him for always blessing me," Vuong recalled.

"In my situation, I take determination, aspiration and youth as assets. The scholarship will be my arm, my weapon to help me realize my dream and give me and other young people the motivation to believe that if we live beautifully and strive, there will be a wide open path ahead," Vuong confided.

Scholarship is a worthy achievement

After two traffic accidents in 2020, Vuong's father's condition worsened. For nearly two years, he has been bedridden and unable to speak. Vuong has been financially responsible for taking care of his father. Vuong studies and works part-time at a coffee shop, making salted rice paper to sell at school.

In February 2023, Vuong's father passed away. Two months later, his younger sister also had a traffic accident and left Vuong.

At that time, there were only about two months left before Vuong took the high school graduation exam . Everything was falling apart. Vuong no longer wanted to do anything. Fortunately, Vuong got up and stood up strong.

Talking about the case of Tran Quang Vuong, Mr. Tang Thanh Tuan - representative of RMIT Vietnam - said that Vuong was highly appreciated by the scholarship board for the way he tried to face adversity.

"With his own desire to learn, determination, will and a process of constant striving, Vuong found opportunities for himself to live and to continue pursuing his dream of going to university," Mr. Tuan added.

Meanwhile, Vuong considers himself very lucky to still be able to go to school. Because, as Vuong said, many of his relatives do not even get to go to school.

"My biggest dream is to finish university. Studying helps to expand my knowledge and I want to use that knowledge to help myself become a useful person, support myself, repay my parents and help others.

When my father and sister passed away, I told myself that if I gave up, I would let down the deep and unceasing care that many people had for me," Vuong shared.

Tourism and hotel management is the field of study that Vuong has always dreamed of. Vuong believes that he can go to many places, learn many new things and create interesting experiences for others when working in this industry.

Life is full of adversity

When Vuong was 6 years old, his mother left. Vuong and his younger sister lived with their father, who had one arm paralyzed. At 6 years old, Vuong went to the fields to catch snails and sell them at the market to buy rice. The three of them clung to each other and lived a difficult life.

His grandmother felt sorry for him so she took Vuong home to raise him, but she was not well off. Vuong did not go to school. When he was 8 years old, Vuong was taken in by an aunt and sent to school. Her family was also poor. After a while, Vuong returned to live with his father.

Vuong applied to work as a waiter at a coffee shop, serving and washing glasses, but was given food and lodging but not paid. When he was in 5th grade, Vuong stopped working as a waiter and started making salted rice paper to sell at school to earn money.

During three years of high school, he had to take care of his sick father and worry about finances, but Vuong was always an excellent student. In 12th grade, Vuong's overall score was 8.6.

Life was full of adversity and hardship since childhood, but Vuong's determination has received heartwarming results. According to Ms. Le Thi Lung, Vuong's assets are nothing but determination and the desire to go to school to change his unfortunate life.
