Daniil Medvedev had his second win at the 2023 Madrid Open, but it was not an easy victory for the No. 2 seed as he was strongly challenged by qualifier Alexander Shevchenko.

Medvedev twice broke back in the deciding set before grabbing another break to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the Manolo Santana Stadium. The second seed was forced to use all his famous defensive prowess to keep his compatriot at bay and eventually won in two hours and 43 minutes for his 300th professional victory.

"Shevchenko played well. He is young, so I am sure he will move up the rankings, especially if he maintains the form he played in this tournament," Medvedev said of Shevchenko, who rose five places to No. 91 in the ATP live rankings thanks to his third-round run at the Madrid Open.

"Shevchenko is still young so he has a lot of time to grow. I have trained with Shevchenko before so I know he can play very well. So the more consistent he is and the more matches he plays like this, maybe next time he will win and improve his position in the ATP rankings. I am very happy that I beat him today."

After overcoming Dominic Thiem in a third-set tie-break to open his Madrid Open campaign, Stefanos Tsitsipas once again had moments of anxiety in his victory over Sebastian Baez. The Greek overcame a formidable challenge to reach the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory.

"Baez made it very difficult for me. I had to work hard on my game," Tsitsipas said after the match. "Baez didn't miss many points. Of course he's a very good cover guy and he runs around the court very well. He used that against me, he moved very easily, he glided around the court like a cheetah."
