Mendy was first arrested in November 2020 and later released on bail. He was returned to prison in August 2021 on another rape charge. The 2018 World Cup winner will have his wages cut by Man City from September 2021 and his contract will expire in June 2023.

According to the British newspaper Sportmail , Mendy receives a weekly salary of 100,000 pounds (125,000 USD) under his contract with Man City. Therefore, he is asking the Etihad Stadium owner to compensate 10 million pounds (12.5 million USD) for unpaid wages. Mendy's lawyer, Nick De Marco KC, confirmed that he has submitted a compensation request to the Labor Court. Man City has not yet commented on the incident.

Mendy began his professional career at Le Havre in 2011, then played for Marseille from 2013 to 2016, and Monaco from 2016 to 2017. Mendy joined Man City for $67.5 million from Monaco in the summer of 2017 and became the most expensive defender in the world at that time. He was even praised by Man City's sporting director Txiki Begiristain as "one of the best defenders in the world".

The French defender played 75 games in all competitions, winning six trophies, including three Premier League titles, two League Cups and a Community Shield. On average, Mendy won a trophy every 12 appearances for Man City.

After leaving Man City, Mendy joined Lorient on a two-year contract and wore the number 5 shirt. This season, the 29-year-old defender has only played three times in Ligue 1, with a total of 78 minutes on the field, without scoring or assisting.

At international level, Mendy has represented France at U16, U17, U18, U19, U21 levels and has made ten appearances for the senior team. He was part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup, playing 40 minutes in a 0–0 draw with Denmark in the group stage.
