Messi and Inter Miami face difficulties
This is the first time since 1983 that the Vancouver Whitecaps have seen such a large crowd at BC Place, as they host Messi and Inter Miami in a high-profile clash in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals.
Helping their opponents set a record for attendance, Messi and Inter Miami also faced difficulties when they lost 0-2 to Vancouver Whitecaps.

It was the immense pressure from the fans at BC Place and the artificial turf that made it difficult for Messi and his teammates at Inter Miami, when they were soon led 1-0 by their opponents Vancouver Whitecaps from the 24th minute thanks to a close-range header from Brian White.
Coach Mascherano used his strongest lineup when Inter Miami visited Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada, an opponent who is also having a great start to the 2025 season, not less than the team from Miami City.
With Messi and Suarez up front, David Beckham's team, who are president and co-owners, have opted for a solid game with Busquets and Federico Redondo holding the midfield, while Tadeo Allende, Segovia, along with Jordi Alba and Marcelo Weigandt, press the ball down the flanks.
Messi led his teammates to dominate possession, at times up to 70%, but they faced a Vancouver Whitecaps team with an extremely annoying style of play and a very solid defense. The Canadian team is also a master of organizing extremely fast counter-attacks. One of them helped them score the opening goal, scored by Brian White after a lightning counter-attack.

Meanwhile, Messi and Suarez tried to create many opportunities to threaten the goal of Japanese goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka (of Vancouver Whitecaps). But most of their attempts to score were unsuccessful.
In the second half, Inter Miami tried to put strong pressure on their opponents. However, Vancouver Whitecaps showed that they were not an easy opponent for Messi and his teammates. Coach Mascherano's team played quite stalemately, creating fewer chances compared to the first half, because Messi and Suarez were always separated by the opponent's defense.
In a stalemate, Inter Miami conceded another goal in the 85th minute, when Sebastian Berhalter raised the score to 2-0 for Vancouver Whitecaps to create a huge advantage in the score before the second leg.
Messi and coach Mascherano still have a lot of work to do to hope to help Inter Miami turn the tables.

For Inter Miami, the 0-2 away loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps is not necessarily the end of the CONCACAF Champions Cup dream. They still have the second leg of the semifinal at home at Chase Stadium and on familiar natural grass at 7 a.m. on May 1 to hope to turn the tables.
In the quarter-finals, Inter Miami also lost 0-1 away to Los Angeles FC, before winning 3-1 at home (3-2 on aggregate) to reach the semi-finals. This is the hope and belief for Messi and his teammates.
