Records from Vietnam's high-altitude meteorological radar system show that from last night to this morning, the North received thousands of lightning strikes concentrated in provinces such as Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Bac Can, Hai Duong, Lao Cai...
According to data from the Cao Khong Meteorological Station, National Hydrometeorological Network Center, last night, within just 50 minutes (11:00-11:50), there were 1,696 lightning strikes in Hai Phong city and surrounding areas. Of these, 433 struck the ground. At 6:00 this morning, there were 635 lightning strikes, of which 225 struck the ground.

As of 7:10 a.m. this morning, the lightning tracking network of the General Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, has continuously recorded an increase in the number of lightning strikes in the northern provinces. At 7:00 a.m. this morning, the number of lightning strikes recorded was 206, of which 101 struck the ground.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting last night and early morning of April 25, in the Northern region there will be rain, moderate rain and scattered thunderstorms, locally heavy to very heavy rain.
Rainfall from 7pm on April 24 to 3am on April 25 was over 80mm in some places, such as Yen Minh (Ha Giang) 82mm, Vinh Bao (Hai Phong) 114mm, Tien Phong (Hai Duong) 112mm, Dong Hai (Thai Binh) 147mm...
According to data from the National Hydrometeorological Network Center (Department of Hydrometeorology), lightning strikes are mainly concentrated in the midland and mountainous provinces of the North such as Phu Tho, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, the provinces and cities of the Red River Delta such as Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Hanoi and the Gulf of Tonkin area.
Between 1:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on April 25, it is estimated that there were more than 23,200 lightning strikes to the ground and in the clouds, of which more than 10,400 lightning strikes to the ground.
Hanoi likely to have thunderstorms during rush hour
According to the 6:30 a.m. April 25 bulletin from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, through monitoring satellite images, thunderstorm location data and weather radar, it was discovered that a strong convective cloud area was developing from the west, moving towards Hanoi and causing thunderstorms in the areas of Ba Vi, Thach That, and Son Tay.
It is forecasted that in the next 30 minutes to 3 hours, this convective cloud will move in and cause showers and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain locally for districts and inner-city districts of Hanoi. During the thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
Where to track lightning information?
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Phuong - Head of Weather Radar Department, National Hydrometeorological Network Center, Department of Hydrometeorology, Vietnam's network currently has 18 lightning positioning stations.
Our country's lightning location network is designed to detect, locate, analyze, display, store and distribute real-time data on cloud and ground-level (CG) and in-cloud (IC) lightning events. This network is connected to the international lightning location system.
With the current network of detectors, the distance at which the detectors can detect lightning is in the range of 400-600km. Thus, in addition to the mainland of Vietnam, lightning locating stations can detect lightning at sea and near the border areas of neighboring countries of Vietnam (areas where thunderstorms can be detected - picture below).
Currently, the National Hydrometeorological Network Center is operating a network system for detecting, locating, and displaying lightning on the website hymetnet.gov.vn.
This website can continuously monitor information about lightning and weather radar. People can monitor lightning risk warnings on the website and the cloud radio response warning areas of the weather radar. People can refer to it to prevent and avoid risks caused by thunderstorms.
