Good model in promoting amateur music in the community

“Ho xu ho, xang xu xang…”, the voices chanting the heart of the traditional music resounded in the middle of the bustling Ninh Kieu wharf. Each person held a piece of paper with the pentatonic notes and the lyrics to practice singing with the artist. Many curious tourists also stopped, received the documents and sang along. As the number of people increased, the melody became smoother and the class became more lively. Ms. Nguyen Thi Vo, a traditional music author in Can Tho , although very knowledgeable about traditional music, also showed up very early to join the class, chanting the heart of the song, and practicing singing with everyone. She said: “It’s not just to “study literature and practice martial arts”, but I came to the class to live in the atmosphere of traditional music in the community.”

Interestingly, among the large number of students, there are many tourists from the Central and Northern regions, who are also very attentive and "eager to learn". Mr. Nguyen Trieu, a tourist from Bac Ninh province, said: "Don ca tai tu is very good, I was absorbed in listening to the artists perform, it was very smooth. Just like the beauty of Quan ho in my hometown, Don ca tai tu is very unique and attractive". We also observed that there were many foreign tourists attentively watching, filming, and taking pictures of the class, showing the attraction and spread of this model.

According to Meritorious Artist Nguyen Thi Kieu Nga, Deputy Director of the Can Tho City Center for Culture and Arts, this is the second year the Don Ca Tai Tu class has been held in the community, with the first weeks being quite successful. Each night, the class has dozens of students, including many tourists. In addition, many artists from Don Ca Tai Tu clubs, teams, and groups in Can Tho City also participate regularly, with the desire to improve their skills.

In each teaching session, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Thi Kieu Nga will briefly present the history and development of the art of amateur singing, then teach singing, from the heart of the song to the amateur songs with lyrics. Students are guided by the instructor to learn about the rhythm, the long song, pronunciation, pronunciation, breathing, and technical instructions in singing the melodies and songs, from basic to advanced.

The most interesting part is probably the interaction with the artists. The participation of People's Artist Truong Ut, Meritorious Artist Ai Hang, Meritorious Artist Thanh Tung... helps to create a lively atmosphere, along with the interaction, although not really formal but full of fun and enthusiasm of students and tourists. Meritorious Artist Ai Hang shared: "I feel that the important thing in this class is to promote the beauty of heritage and spread the love of Don Ca Tai Tu to everyone."

Meritorious Artist Nguyen Thi Kieu Nga added that the 2025 Don Ca Tai Tu Community Training Class will be organized into two classes. The first class will take place at 7 p.m. every Friday and Sunday evening, from September 19 to October 19. The second class will also take place at 7 p.m. every Friday and Sunday evening, from October 24 to November 23. Each class will have a total of 10 sessions.

According to the leaders of the Can Tho City Cultural and Arts Center, in recent years, the city's cultural and artistic movement has developed, with the emergence of many new art forms. In particular, the amateur music movement has developed widely from the city to the communes and wards through the activities of clubs, teams, and groups; teaching and training classes; festivals and amateur music competitions. Thanks to that, the amateur music movement has developed strongly, deeply into life in many diverse forms, linked with the activities of families, schools, communities and the service - tourism sector.

The Don Ca Tai Tu class in the community is a good and practical model to implement the Project "Preserving and promoting the value of intangible cultural heritage of Can Tho City, period 2021-2025, orientation to 2030" of Can Tho City. The class also helps to raise the sense of responsibility of the community in protecting and promoting the Don Ca Tai Tu art, associated with building a typical tourism product of the city.
