People of Nam Cha village (Nam Tam commune) take care of sugarcane plants.
With the goal of developing agriculture in a sustainable direction and with stable output, the commune surveyed the area of inefficient upland and hilly land, and mobilized people to convert to new varieties of crops with high economic efficiency. Among them, there is the LC2025 sugarcane variety according to the linkage model, which is considered an effective solution to solve the problem of "good harvest, low price" of local agricultural products when mass production.
Sharing the reason for choosing LC2025 sugarcane variety for experimental planting, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Da - Chairman of Nam Tam Commune People's Committee said: "This type of plant has a short growing time, uncomplicated care techniques and is especially suitable for local soil and climate conditions. With the linkage model, farmers are guaranteed output, completely assured to expand the area".
Currently, the whole commune has more than 10 hectares of LC2025 sugarcane planted on a trial basis in the villages of Nam Cha, Seo Phin, Can Co... Households participating in the model are supported by Lai Chau Agricultural Services Company Limited with 100% advance payment of seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and transfer of cultivation techniques, and payment is only required during harvest.
Boldly innovating, Mr. Tan A Long's family was one of the first households in Nam Cha village to register to convert more than 1 hectare of land previously used for cassava cultivation to sugarcane cultivation. Mr. Long shared: "We have been cultivating cassava for many years but our income is not stable because traders are forcing down prices. After being promoted and introduced to the model of sugarcane cultivation and output consumption by commune officials, I found it reasonable and participated. After 8 months of planting, the sugarcane grew quickly, long and green, hopefully it will yield high yields."
Mr. Tan A Pu's family (Nam Chang village) also participated in the sugarcane growing model with an area of over 1 hectare. Previously, he used to grow one crop of corn on the hilly land. Instead of leaving the land bare, he intercropped sugarcane to make the most of the area. Mr. Pu said: "Before planting, the company's technical staff went to the field to guide the soil preparation, fertilization, seeding and pest control. My family followed the correct care process. I find that growing sugarcane saves on care compared to previous crops."
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh - Director of Lai Chau Agricultural Services Company Limited, the LC2025 sugarcane variety planted in Nam Tam land is suitable for the climate and soil conditions. The growth cycle of sugarcane lasts from 10 to 11 months. The company commits to purchasing all raw sugarcane products from farmers at market prices; there is a price insurance policy from 1,050 to 1,100 VND/kg to help farmers feel secure in production. If the model gives positive results, the company is ready to expand its cooperation and continue to invest in inputs. Conversely, farmers and local authorities also need to accompany businesses to achieve the highest production efficiency.
The sugarcane cultivation linkage model in the commune initially helped farmers change their production mindset. Instead of small-scale, spontaneous farming as before, people applied technical advances and proactively participated in the linkage model according to the value chain from production to consumption. This is a sustainable direction for agricultural restructuring today. According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Da - Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, the local government will evaluate the effectiveness of the model after the first harvest. If positive results are achieved, the commune will expand the model in association with the construction of a stable raw material area. From there, increase the economic value per unit area, towards sustainable commodity agricultural production, associated with the consumer market.
