After two weeks of release, Moana 2 continues to dominate the North American box office, earning an additional $52 million over the weekend. Although this figure is significantly down from its spectacular Thanksgiving debut of $225 million, Moana 2 still holds the top spot, affirming the film's undeniable appeal.

This is a remarkable feat, as the film grossed nearly $300 million domestically alone and a whopping $600 million globally. More than just a fun movie, Moana 2 has become a global phenomenon, proving that stories of friendship, courage, and perseverance are timeless.

This sequel to the Disney animated film not only inherits the success of the first part but also affirms the strong and lasting appeal of Moana and her friends on their journey across the ocean.

The film brings a new story, when Moana (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) and Maui, a demigod voiced by Dwayne The Rock Johnson, continue their exciting adventure to save a mystical island that is sinking due to the curse of an evil god.

The impressive figures above not only demonstrate the success of a family film, but also demonstrate the strong return of Disney in 2024. With a total global revenue of up to 600 million USD, Moana 2 has surpassed Frozen II I of 2019, setting a revenue record for the week after Thanksgiving. At the same time, the film also entered the top 5 highest-grossing films of the year, alongside famous names such as Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine .

Moan a 2 also helps Disney maintain its position as the "box office king" with 3 films in the top 5 this year, reflecting the studio's commercial strength and showing the audience's preference for animated works with emotional content and meaningful messages.

Meanwhile, the second highest-grossing film at the North American box office last week was Wicked: Part I - Universal's latest film, with a revenue of 34.9 million USD in its third week of release. Wicked continued to prove its appeal when raising its total revenue in North America to 320.5 million USD and global revenue to 455.6 million USD.

Third place went to Paramount’s epic Gladiator II , which grossed $12.5 million over the weekend. The film not only features epic battles but also attracts a large audience of viewers who are passionate about epic historical stories.

Over the weekend, new releases like Y2K and The Order , despite notable appearances, failed to create a strong enough push to compete with the box office giants. However, the sci-fi film Interstellar: 10th Anniversary surprised everyone when it was re-released, earning $4.4 million, a huge success for a film released 10 years ago.

“Despite the influx of new releases, Moana 2 , Wicked , and Gladiator II are still dominating the box office and providing a strong momentum for a strong year,” said analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “These films continue to prove that audiences still love big-budget fare, with compelling stories and big-name casts.”

With blockbusters like Kraven the Hunter and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim set to hit theaters in the coming weeks, the North American box office is set to be a rollercoaster ride. However, Moana 2's impressive numbers make it a tough sell.

Top-grossing movies in North America last weekend:

1. Moana 2 – $52 million

2. Wicked – $34.9 million

3. Gladiator II – $12.5 million

4. Red One – $7 million
