According to the WSJ , the high-profile partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft, once hailed as one of the most successful collaborations in technology history, is on the verge of reaching a breaking point.
Specifically, sources indicate that deep disagreements over the future of AI, product control, and computing resources are pitting the two sides against each other, putting one of the tech world's most important strategic alliances at risk.
OpenAI, the startup behind the ChatGPT chatbot, is eager to loosen Microsoft's control over its AI products and computing resources. Its biggest goal is to transform into a profitable company and go public, a crucial step in raising additional capital and scaling up.
However, to achieve this, Microsoft's approval is crucial. This is also the root of all the tension.
According to sources, negotiations between the two sides have been difficult. Things reached a climax in recent weeks when OpenAI's senior executives discussed a "key decision": accusing Microsoft of unfair competitive practices during their collaboration.
The Wall Street Journal suggests that OpenAI's move is aimed at seeking review from federal regulators regarding potential antitrust violations in its contract terms, as well as a public relations campaign to put pressure on Microsoft.
However, taking such a step would undoubtedly seriously threaten the six-year partnership between the two sides.
Microsoft and OpenAI began their collaboration in 2019, when the software giant invested $1 billion in the startup. Under the current agreement, Microsoft has exclusive rights to sell OpenAI's software tools through its Azure cloud service and priority access to the company's technology.
Additionally, Microsoft is reportedly OpenAI's sole computing provider, although it has allowed the startup to create its own data center project called Stargate in 2024.
