Eggs, avocados, protein-rich foods, and plenty of water can help combat the dizziness and nausea associated with heavy drinking during the holidays.
Scientists at the University of Buffalo (USA) discovered that after drinking alcohol, people often crave junk food. This is a result of the increase in blood sugar caused by alcohol, which stimulates hunger hormones.
However, contrary to popular belief, greasy foods cannot "absorb the effects of alcohol" the next day. By then, the alcohol has been digested and there is nothing left to absorb. Experts suggest three methods to help alleviate hangovers and dizziness after drinking alcohol.
Drink plenty of water.
The main cause of a hangover is the effect of ethanol in drinks. This is a toxic chemical with diuretic properties, which can lead to dehydration in those who drink alcohol. Experts recommend drinking a large glass of water immediately after sobering up.
For breakfast, you should also choose hydrating foods, such as yogurt, which is about 85% water. Full-fat yogurt also contains plenty of electrolytes and potassium, restoring fluid levels in the body. Adding juicy fruits to yogurt, such as chopped melon, bananas, and strawberries, is also a way to replenish potassium.
Egg
After rehydrating, the headache and nausea will lessen, but you may still feel tired. This is because alcohol increases levels of the stress hormones epinephrine or adrenaline in the body, which in turn leads to poor sleep quality.
To supplement your protein and calorie intake, you might crave fried foods. However, the saturated fat content slows down digestion. Simple carbohydrates also negatively impact blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling sluggish.
The only fried food recommended is eggs. Eggs contain the amino acid N-acetyl cysteine, which plays a key role in the body's detoxification process. Researchers in Japan have also discovered compounds in avocados that protect the liver from damage. Therefore, the ideal meal would be whole-grain bread, half a mashed avocado, and a boiled egg.

Protein-rich foods
Alcohol increases the body's production of cytokines—proteins that support a healthy immune system, but too much of them can cause inflammation. Research has found that oily fish rich in omega-3s can reduce this inflammation. The healthy proteins and fats found in salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines help curb appetite and prevent overeating.
The Telegraph presents a recipe for marinating salmon. The sauce consists of half a lemon, a pinch of chili powder, dill, and cilantro. Rub the mixture onto the salmon fillet, wrap it in foil, and bake it in the oven at 180°C (without fan) or 160°C (with fan) for 15 minutes. Served with cooked spinach or broccoli and white rice, this dish will help satisfy any cravings.
