Dishes to help sober up and avoid hangovers during holidays and Tet

VnExpressVnExpress12/01/2024

Eggs, avocados, protein-rich foods and plenty of water can help beat the holiday hangover.

Scientists at the University of Buffalo (USA) discovered that after being drunk, people often crave junk food. This is the result of increased blood sugar caused by alcohol, promoting hunger hormones.

However, contrary to popular belief, greasy food does not “absorb alcohol” the next day. By then, the alcohol has been digested and there is nothing left to absorb. Experts suggest three methods to help get rid of the hangover.

Drink plenty of water

The main cause of a hangover is the effects of ethanol in the drink. This is a toxic chemical that acts as a diuretic, which can cause the drinker to become dehydrated. Experts recommend drinking a large glass of water as soon as you sober up.

For breakfast, you should also choose hydrating foods, such as yogurt, which is about 85% water. Full-fat yogurt is also rich in electrolytes and potassium, restoring your body's fluid levels. Adding juicy fruits to your yogurt, such as chopped melon, bananas, and strawberries, is also a way to add potassium.

Egg

Once you've rehydrated, your headache and nausea will subside, but you may still feel tired. This is because alcohol increases the levels of the stress hormone epinephrine, or adrenaline, in your body, which can lead to poor sleep quality.

For protein and calories, you'll crave fried foods. However, saturated fat slows down digestion. Simple carbs also negatively impact blood sugar, leaving you feeling sluggish.

The only fried food that is recommended is eggs. Eggs contain the amino acid N acetyl cysteine, which plays a key role in the body's detoxification process. Researchers in Japan have also found that a compound in avocados protects the liver from damage. So the ideal meal is whole grain bread, half a mashed avocado and a boiled egg.

Protein-rich foods

Alcohol increases the body's production of cytokines - proteins that support the immune system at healthy levels, but too much of them can cause inflammation. Research has found that oily fish rich in omega-3s can reduce this inflammation. Protein and healthy fats found in salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines help curb appetite and prevent the urge to binge.

The Telegraph recommends a recipe for marinating salmon. The sauce consists of half a lemon, a pinch of chilli powder, dill, and coriander. Rub the mixture onto the salmon fillet, wrap in foil, and bake for 15 minutes at 180°C (without fan) or 160°C (with fan). Serve the fish with spinach or cooked broccoli and white rice to beat the hangover.
