In order to prepare well for the 33rd SEA Games taking place in Thailand, the Vietnamese table tennis team has left for China for training since November 7. The team will train in Nanning province (China) until December 2 before returning home and then going to Thailand to attend the 2025 Southeast Asian Games .
The current table tennis team consists of: Head coach Vu Van Trung; assistant coaches Phan Huy Hoang, Dinh Quang Linh; 10 athletes including: Dinh Anh Hoang, Nguyen Anh Tu, Nguyen Duc Tuan, Doan Ba Tuan Anh, Le Dinh Duc, Nguyen Thi Nga, Bui Ngoc Lan, Nguyen Khoa Dieu Khanh, Tran Mai Ngoc and Mai Hoang My Trang.
Among them, Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc are expected to win the gold medal of the 33rd SEA Games in the mixed doubles event. The duo of the T&T People's Public Security Table Tennis Club is the current champion of this event at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia.
The remaining athletes are also the best players selected through their performance at national championships. Only Mai Hoang My Trang is a special case as she did not rank in the top 4 women's singles at the 2025 National Championship.
In terms of expertise and experience, My Trang is still capable of competing in top table tennis matches. However, she is getting old.
Two years ago, Mai Hoang My Trang did not attend the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia. Then, she also did not attend the 19th ASIAD in China.
After 2 years, strong table tennis teams in the region such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia… are all actively preparing their forces. Therefore, the target of 1 gold medal can be considered suitable for the Vietnamese table tennis team.
The 10 players of the team are striving to achieve success in Thailand this time. The training trip to China plays a big role in estimating the peak performance of the athletes heading to the tournament.
Table tennis at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand has 7 events: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles, men's team, and women's team. The Vietnamese table tennis team will participate in all 7 events.
Vietnam table tennis has won only 8 gold medals in the history of participating in the SEA Games since 1995, equal to the number of gold medals of Thailand. In recent regional sports events, Vietnam table tennis has won 1 gold medal in the men's doubles, men's singles and mixed doubles.
In table tennis, Singapore is the leading country in Southeast Asia with 63 gold medals. Following them is Indonesia with 11 gold medals. Thailand and Vietnam are third and fourth respectively.
