According to the AI Maturity Index released by the Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD) on November 11, China is leading the world in the number of artificial intelligence patents filed between 2014 and 2023.
Speaking after the IMD released the AI Maturity Index, Professor Michael Wade, Director of the TONOMUS Global Center for Digital Transformation and AI, said China is “holding a prominent position” in AI innovation thanks to its focus on practical applications such as manufacturing, healthcare and autonomous vehicles.
According to Mr. Wade, China filed more than 38,210 generative AI patent applications between 2014 and 2023, six times higher than the 6,276 patents filed by the US.
He said China is not focusing on creating the strongest AI capabilities, but on commercializing AI in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Despite being hit by export controls that make it difficult for the country to access advanced chips, China has maintained strong growth in this field.
IMD's AI Maturity Index assesses the extent to which businesses are applying AI to transform their business strategy and operations.
According to this ranking, NVIDIA topped the list, followed by Microsoft and Alphabet in second and third place, respectively. Among the top 300 companies surveyed, the number of Chinese companies was second only to the US.
The report also found that businesses with a high level of AI maturity achieved an average revenue growth rate of 6.79%, while the remaining group experienced a decline of 0.51%. The technology and finance sectors were the two industries that demonstrated the strongest AI application capabilities.
In China, corporations such as China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom and NTT are investing billions of dollars in data centers and large-scale computing capacity, while state-owned enterprises in the energy and construction sectors are still considered to have lower levels of AI application./.
