On the morning of November 13, Vietnam time, or the evening of November 12, US time, US President Donald Trump signed a spending bill, allowing the US government to reopen after the longest shutdown in history, lasting 43 days.
Mr Trump signed the bill into law in the Oval Office, where he blamed Democrats for the government shutdown, while surrounded by Republican lawmakers and officials.
Before signing, he stated: “Today we send a clear message that we will never give in.”
Earlier the same day, the US Congress officially passed a bill to end the federal government shutdown.
The bill would fund the Department of Defense , the Department of Agriculture, veterans' agencies and Congress through next fall, while maintaining funding for the remaining agencies through the end of January 2026.
Some 670,000 civil servants on temporary leave will be returned to work and an equal number forced to work without pay, including more than 60,000 air traffic controllers and airport security staff, will be fully compensated.
The government will also restore jobs to employees laid off during the lockdown, while aviation operations are also gradually returning to normal after a nationwide halt.
The longest government shutdown in US history has had a series of serious consequences. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the shutdown has caused about $14 billion in damage to the US economy.
