A 72-year-old man became unwell during the second half of the match at the Amex Stadium, according to a statement from Brighton FC. Paramedics and emergency services responded quickly, performing CPR and using a defibrillator in the stands, The Times reported.
According to Sky Sports , Brighton's board considered suspending the match, but decided not to interrupt the event because the match was already underway, and most fans and players from both teams were unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
Despite the efforts of the medical team, the man was confirmed dead shortly after the final whistle. Brighton chief executive Paul Barber expressed his deep sadness in a statement: “This is a sad end to the club’s first game of the new season and we would like to send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the man who has passed away.”
Brighton's board also confirmed that they will support the family of the deceased in the coming days. The match between Brighton and Fulham in the first round of the 2025/26 Premier League ended with a score of 1-1. The home team took the lead with a goal from Matt O'Riley, but in the 90+7 minute, Rodrigo Muniz equalized for Fulham.
