Kobbie Mainoo is not used at MU. |
Mainoo has played just 228 minutes this season and has started just one Carabao Cup game. Zirkzee has not even started and has only lasted 90 minutes from five substitute appearances. Both face uncertain futures as January approaches.
Sources say Mainoo has done everything he can to improve his form and earn points with the new coach. He has replaced his personal chef to optimise his nutrition and has been training with a personal trainer during international breaks. However, Mainoo is still behind Bruno Fernandes in the race for a place. The England international asked to leave the club on loan at the end of the summer transfer window and could reapply in January.
Zirkzee has been linked with Italian clubs after a period of neglect at Old Trafford. When asked about the possibility of letting the two players leave, Amorim replied: “The club comes first. We have to think about the team and from there anything can happen.”
The Portuguese coach admitted that he understands the players' impatience, especially when the 2026 World Cup is approaching: "I used to be a player, I understand that feeling. I want them to be happy, but MU is still above all. If I can help the club and the players, I will. If not, I have to think about the collective."
Amorim also spoke about plans to strengthen the midfield in the future. He said the team needs more players with suitable characteristics, although the timing has not been determined. However, Amorim affirmed that he is satisfied with the current force and believes the players still have a lot of potential.
MU are said to be recruiting a new midfielder at the end of the season. Casemiro, 33, is out of contract in June and could leave the team despite playing consistently this season.
