Manchester United sent a scout to the Friends Arena in Solna to watch the international friendly between Sweden and Algeria last week to assess Hicham Boudaoui. The player is expected to leave Ligue 1 this summer.
Despite playing for only an hour and leaving the field when his team was trailing 4-0, the 25-year-old Algerian player still proved why experts in France believe he is ready for the demanding Premier League.
The 25-year-old won all his one-on-one duels and remained calm in Algeria's half. He also displayed excellent passing ability. Boudaoui even came close to scoring with a decisive shot from outside the penalty area, the ball narrowly missing the post.
Boudaoui has just had an outstanding season, becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in Ligue 1. According to data from Datascout , he ranks first in sprint speed, fourth in acceleration times, and sixth in distance covered at high intensity.
Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to add physically strong players to his squad, and Boudaoui is considered a suitable option. Manchester United were unable to sign the Nice player last summer because both clubs were competing in the Europa League.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe agreed to no player transfers between the two teams until September 2025 to meet UEFA's requirement for multi-club ownership. This means the Boudaoui deal could only be completed on the final day of the summer transfer window, when the Premier League deadline is 7 pm on September 1st.
Nice could demand £20 million for the midfielder. Manchester United have already spent £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha and may have to sell more players to raise funds for further high-profile transfers.
