Floods will become more complicated due to climate change.

In addition to heavy rainfall, extreme weather events such as thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and lightning are also likely to occur in the coming time, so people need to prepare safe response plans.

Heavy rain accompanied by many extreme weather phenomena

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, this rain occurred in the context of the ground in the northern mountainous region being saturated with water due to the impact of previous heavy rains. Localities such as Bac Kan , Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Ha Giang and Tuyen Quang are facing a high risk of landslides and sudden flash floods, especially on steep mountain passes, riverside and stream areas.

"Just a short period of intense rain is enough to cause flash floods or serious landslides. People in mountainous areas need to pay special attention and take timely preventive measures, not being subjective even though it has just started raining," Mr. Huong noted.

Not only mountainous areas, urban areas in the delta and coastal areas of the North such as Hai Phong and Quang Ninh also need to be on guard against flooding. In addition, provinces such as Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh may record rainfall of up to 100mm, even exceeding 150mm in some places.

In addition to heavy rainfall, extreme weather events such as tornadoes, strong winds, hail and lightning strikes are also likely to occur in the coming period. Strong storms can cause trees and electric poles to fall, roofs to be blown off, and damage to civil structures. During thunderstorms, people are advised to limit going outside, turn off electrical equipment, and avoid taking shelter under large trees or near metal poles.

Mr. Huong noted that lightning during thunderstorms can strike houses, trees or electronic equipment, causing fires and explosions and causing unsafe conditions. Therefore, people need to proactively check their home lightning protection systems and take necessary preventive measures in extreme weather conditions.

Meanwhile, people living near rivers, streams or low-lying areas need to closely monitor weather warnings, because prolonged heavy rain can cause water levels to rise rapidly and cause widespread flooding, affecting daily life and agricultural production.

Climate change makes heavy rains more extreme and unpredictable

This heavy rain continues to show the clear impacts of climate change on the weather system in Vietnam. Meteorological experts say that rain is no longer evenly distributed seasonally as before, instead, there are extreme rains, large amounts and concentrated in a short period of time - favorable conditions for natural disasters to occur in a chain and be difficult to control.

Rains and floods are increasingly extreme and unpredictable.

The intense heat alternating with extreme rains in a short period of time is also making it difficult for ecosystems and agricultural production to adapt. Experts say that it is necessary to re-plan disaster prevention infrastructure in areas that often experience heavy rains, especially in the northern mountainous districts.

In addition, people need to be trained and raised about disaster response. Early warning systems and emergency weather messages need to be widely deployed, while the role of local authorities in supporting population evacuation, checking for landslides and ensuring the safety of public works should be strengthened.

The forecast of the heaviest rains of the season in the North is a clear warning of the increasing trend of extreme weather. To minimize damage, people need to closely monitor weather reports, take proactive measures to prevent natural disasters and be well prepared for each heavy rain. Local authorities and relevant agencies need to intervene early to warn, respond and protect the safety of the community.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, the peak rainy season in the North is concentrated from July to September. The rainy season in the North in the coming time is expected to last from June to September. During this period, the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas is very high.

Total rainfall in the North from June to October tends to be approximately the same as the average of many years. In November, total rainfall in the North tends to be lower than the average of many years.
