In a video posted on X on May 27, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer recommended for children and pregnant women in the US.
Speaking in the video, Mr. Kennedy said these vaccines have been removed from the list of recommended shots by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for two groups of children and pregnant women.
"I couldn't be happier to announce that as of today, COVID-19 vaccines for healthy children and healthy pregnant women have been removed from the CDC-recommended immunization schedule," Kennedy said in a statement .
A vaccine skeptic, Mr Kennedy said this fits with US President Donald Trump's "Make America Healthy Again" agenda.
Appearing alongside Kennedy in the video, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Marty Makary said there was no evidence that healthy children needed to get the COVID-19 vaccine on schedule.
Most countries have stopped recommending COVID-19 vaccination for children, Mr. Makary added.
In the UK, children under 12 are eligible for the vaccine, but it is only recommended for children with weakened immune systems. Accordingly, British researchers at the University of Huddersfield published a study suggesting that COVID-19 vaccines for young children are "unnecessary".
Under current guidelines, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark and Switzerland recommend annual COVID-19 vaccination for people aged 65 and over and those at high risk.
The World Health Organization only recommends this vaccine for children with underlying medical conditions.
