US President Donald Trump said on May 7 that he would soon make an official announcement about the possibility of easing export controls on AI chips to some countries in the Gulf.
This is considered an important diplomatic step taking place right before Mr. Trump's first foreign trip in his second term.
Speaking to reporters, the US President said: "We can do that. An official announcement will be made soon."
The Biden administration had previously imposed strict controls on the export of AI chips, especially advanced ones made by US companies, to Middle Eastern countries, citing the possibility that these sensitive semiconductor components could be diverted to China and used to bolster Beijing’s military capabilities.
But President Trump is working to reestablish strategic ties with key Middle Eastern nations and push for deeper economic and technological engagement. Easing restrictions on AI chip exports could be a lever for the United States to maintain its influence in the energy-rich region and its growing position in the global tech race.
Also in the statement on May 7, Mr. Trump revealed that the US is considering renaming the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf, a move that is expected to receive support from Arab leaders in the region but could spark a backlash from Iran.
According to the plan, President Trump will visit three Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The trip is considered the first "test of fire" in Mr. Trump's second term.
With the announcement of AI chips and changing the name of the Persian Gulf, the 47th boss of the White House is sending a clear signal about prioritizing building a new axis of relations with the Arab world./.
