The US has warned that it will carry out more air strikes against pro-Iranian forces in the Middle East and is ready to counter their actions.
"What happened on February 2 is just the beginning of a series of US responses. There will be more steps, some obvious, others less obvious. However, I would not describe this as a military campaign without end," White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said today.
Adviser Sullivan said the airstrikes on Iraq and Syria had been highly effective, reducing the combat capabilities of pro-Iranian forces there. He affirmed that the US would "respond proportionately and significantly" to threats in the region, emphasizing that Washington had prepared plans to deal with any enemy actions.
"Further strikes will send a clear message that Washington will respond when its forces are attacked and American citizens are killed," the White House official said.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the raid two days ago was "only the first action" and that the country would apply more retaliatory measures.
The US military carried out a large-scale airstrike on the afternoon of February 2 against the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Tehran-backed militias in Iraq and Syria. US military aircraft launched 125 guided munitions at more than 85 targets in 8 locations during the raid.
The move was in response to a drone attack on a US base in Jordan a week ago that killed three US soldiers. Washington blamed pro-Tehran militias for the attack and vowed to retaliate, while Iran denied the accusation.
