According to a VNA reporter in Washington, President Donald Trump on the afternoon of November 24 signed an executive order to strengthen US artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives through a new plan called the "Genesis Mission" to promote the use of AI for scientific purposes.
The “Genesis Mission” will direct the Department of Energy (DOE), the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and national laboratories to partner with private companies to share federal datasets, advanced supercomputing capabilities, and scientific facilities.
According to OSTP Director Michael Kratsios, this is the largest mobilization of federal scientific resources in the US since the Apollo program. The mission is expected to accelerate scientific breakthroughs in areas such as pharmaceuticals, energy production and engineering.
Since the 1990s, America's scientific edge has faced challenges, Mr. Kratsios said, citing a decline in the number of new drug approvals and a decline in research output.
The Genesis Mission aims to address that problem by “unifying the agencies’ scientific efforts and integrating AI as a scientific tool to revolutionize the way science and research are conducted,” he said.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the plan will leverage AI to analyze the vast amounts of data stored at DOE’s 17 national laboratories. Wright also promised an “incredible increase in the pace of scientific discovery and innovation.”
The order, along with other provisions, requires agencies to make their data more readable using neural networks (NNs) and other AI tools. Scientific data held by the government and federal computing infrastructure will be made available to university researchers, private companies, and national security experts.
The order directs DOE to build integrated software that will allow scientists and engineers to combine the department's scientific data sets and instruments with AI neural networks.
The order also requires DOE to develop a new catalog of scientific and engineering challenges that could benefit from AI, with a specific focus on energy issues, discovery science, and national security concerns.
Additionally, according to Secretary Wright, the order is also designed to harness AI in ways that will increase domestic energy production and make the electric grid more efficient.
The scientific data the White House plans to open up for AI analysis falls into three broad categories. The first is for a wide range of researchers, including scientists in universities and the private sector.
The second group is for proprietary work—for example, a semiconductor company that wants to use a government X-ray accelerator to develop or test a new product.
The third group involves national security datasets and will be available only to authorized researchers.
White House officials say the project aims to connect big data sets and government supercomputers with the AI capabilities of hyperscaler technology companies.
Companies like Nvidia, Oracle, Dell, AMD and Hewlett Packard Enterprise have all recently announced supercomputing partnerships with Washington. These and many other partners are expected to play a key role in the Genesis Mission./.
