The US wants to de-escalate tensions in relations with China

VnExpressVnExpress13/05/2023

US Secretary of State's advisor said Washington wants to resume dialogue and reduce tensions in relations with Beijing after the balloon shooting incident.

"We want to return to the plans we prepared in February, before the incident of the spy balloon flying into the US, when Secretary of State Antony Blinken was supposed to go to Beijing to discuss further the contents that the two countries' leaders exchanged in Bali last year," Derek Chollet, US State Department Advisor, said on May 13 in an interview with Chinese media.

Mr. Chollet is a foreign policy adviser to Secretary of State Blinken. The US diplomat stressed that Mr. Blinken wants to visit China in the near future and that Washington is looking to ease tensions in relations with Beijing.

Chollet revealed that the prospect of Secretary of State Blinken's visit to China was discussed at a meeting between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Wang Yi, which took place in Austria this week.

The two sides shared their expectations for the visit and how to organize dialogue between the two countries, especially on reducing tensions in bilateral relations. Mr. Chollet said that Beijing was not interested in the option of officials from both sides meeting directly, while Washington was ready to promote dialogue.

On May 8, ahead of the meeting between Mr. Wang Yi and Mr. Sullivan, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang warned that US-China relations "are falling back into a frozen state."

Mr. Tan assessed that bilateral relations have improved after Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden pledged to strengthen dialogue at a meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Indonesia in November 2022.

However, the dialogue and cooperation program that the two sides agreed on was interrupted after the US shot down a Chinese balloon in its airspace.
