Specifically, the US re-imposed sanctions on a number of organizations involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that had previously been “blacklisted”, and implemented new measures against a number of sanctioned ship owners.
Those targeted include Moscow shipping and service companies, the state-owned maritime rescue agency, more than 10 ships, the Nord Stream 2 project operator AG and a Russia-based insurance company.
Nord Stream 2 AG has filed for bankruptcy and recently, American businessman Stephen Lynch expressed his interest in buying Nord Stream 2.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is designed to deliver an additional 55 billion cubic meters of Russian gas per year across the Baltic Sea to Germany.
In September 2022, explosions destroyed two branches of the Nord Stream pipeline, each carrying up to 27.5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Germany before conflict broke out in Ukraine.
One branch of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was destroyed in the explosion, while another branch of the pipeline remained intact.
The event has sparked much controversy and suspicion about the motive behind the explosion, and has had a profound impact on global geopolitical situations, especially relations between Russia and the West.
