Increasing the value of durian in an organic direction

BDK - Durian is considered a key crop, bringing high economic value to farmers in Cho Lach district. Thanks to suitable soil conditions, long-standing production experience and a spirit of learning, local people have been raising the brand of Cho Lach durian through the application of technical advances and especially organic production - a sustainable direction in the context of modern agriculture.

In Son Chau hamlet, Son Dinh commune, Mr. Bach Thanh Sang is one of the pioneers applying the organic durian growing model. On an area of more than 1 hectare of land, Mr. Sang focuses on investing in a modern automatic irrigation system combined with providing nutrients directly to the trees, helping to save labor and optimize water use efficiency. More importantly, he focuses on using decomposed manure, covering the tree base with a layer of natural grass to improve soil structure, retain moisture and limit erosion and leaching.

Mr. Sang said: “Growing organic durian not only protects the trees, protects the environment but also gives a fairly stable yield. Currently, my durian garden yields an average of more than 50 fruits per tree. The important thing is that the fruit quality is superior, making it easier to find a market than before.”

According to the Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Son Dinh Ho Phu Quoc Commune, the locality is actively encouraging farmers to switch to organic farming, while coordinating to establish production and consumption chains. In this way, farmers have stable outputs, and businesses have standard raw material areas to supply domestic and foreign markets.

Not only Mr. Bach Thanh Sang, many farmers in Cho Lach are also gradually changing their thinking and working methods. A typical example is Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phu, residing in Phu Binh hamlet, Vinh Binh commune. Previously, Mr. Phu abused chemical fertilizers and stimulants, which made the trees weak and difficult to bear fruit. However, since switching to an organic model and being instructed by an agricultural engineer on proper care techniques, his more than 8,000m2 durian garden has recovered well, the trees are lush and produce fruit steadily. Mr. Phu shared: “Previously, I thought that using a lot of fertilizers and pesticides would make the trees grow well and bear a lot of fruit. But after a few crops, I saw that the trees gradually weakened and the yield decreased significantly. Thanks to being instructed to switch to organic farming, knowing how to fertilize with compost, ferment microorganisms, and water properly, the trees have improved significantly, with even shoots, thick green leaves, and natural fruit set without the need for stimulants. Last year, the garden brought in a good income, and traders came to place orders.”

“Currently, Cho Lach district has nearly 1,400 hectares of durian, with many gardens that have produced stable fruit and met export standards. Increasing the value of organic durian not only opens up opportunities to increase income for farmers but is also a necessary preparation step to meet the increasing demands of the market, especially official export markets such as China, Korea, Japan...”, said Tran Huu Nghi, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cho Lach district.

Investing in organic durian production is no longer a solitary choice, but is becoming an inevitable trend to help Cho Lach farmers develop this long-term fruit tree sustainably. With positive signals from this model, the agricultural sector of Cho Lach district promises to continue to affirm its position on the map of Vietnamese specialty fruits.
