Elevating Nam O fish sauce brand

After 3 years of implementation, the project “Preserving Nam O fish sauce craft village” associated with tourism development in Da Nang city has achieved many positive signs. This has contributed significantly to preserving heritage as well as promoting the development of local tourism products.

Contribute to preserving and developing craft villages

According to the report of the People's Committee of Lien Chieu district, the Nam O fish sauce craft village is being maintained and developed in Hoa Hiep Nam ward and Hoa Hiep Bac ward. As of January 2024, the Nam O fish sauce craft village association has 69 members, including 3 cooperatives (Binh Minh fish sauce cooperative, Hoa Hiep I agricultural cooperative, O Long cooperative), 10 fish sauce processing facilities of relatively large scale, 17 facilities registered their own brands, the remaining households work seasonally. Each year, the fish sauce output reaches 200-300 thousand liters, in addition to a number of other products such as shrimp paste, fish sauce, dried fish of all kinds, averaging 25-30 tons/year, creating jobs for about 220 workers.

To preserve and develop the Nam O fish sauce making profession, departments, branches and sectors have implemented many activities to support craft villages such as investing in tools, packaging, labels, organizing consultations, guiding subjects participating in the OCOP program, creating conditions for subjects to participate in fairs, exhibitions, conferences connecting supply and demand... Lien Chieu District People's Committee has built a fleet of 6 boats with a capacity of 20-145 CV to catch anchovies to serve as raw materials for the villagers to produce fish sauce; training for members of the Nam O Fish Sauce Craft Village Association on protecting consumer rights, digital transformation, and e-commerce platforms.

In addition, the locality also invests in infrastructure, urban beautification, security and order, and environmental sanitation such as building a map to guide the traffic system in the craft village, historical and cultural relic sites, and directions to the craft village's production facilities. The district has issued house number certificates for residential areas; invested in and renovated the drainage system, concrete roads, and lighting according to the annual plan.

According to Vice Chairman of Lien Chieu District People's Committee Tran Cong Nguyen, after the project was issued, departments, branches, and localities have actively and proactively organized and implemented many activities to support craft villages. The project is considered a breakthrough to preserve and develop craft villages, raise awareness and responsibility of agencies, functions, and craft villagers in preserving and developing fish sauce making in the city. Although there are still many difficulties in the implementation process, the implementation has gradually gone into depth and substance, ensuring both the lives of people and preserving and developing craft villages.

Promoting the development of craft village tourism

In order for Nam O fish sauce to develop sustainably, in recent times, departments and branches have actively supported the promotion of products to consumers. In particular, the Department of Industry and Trade has coordinated with departments and branches to establish points of sale and display of OCOP products and Vietnamese goods at MM Mega Market supermarket, Han market, Con market, etc.; supported production households to participate in fairs and trade connections in the locality and neighboring provinces.

The Department of Tourism supports the promotion of local OCOP products on the tourism information portal; connects tourism businesses (hotels, qualified businesses, specialty supermarkets, etc.), and brings Nam O fish sauce products to hotels and resorts. The Department of Tourism has consulted on planning, investing, upgrading and exploiting tourism services with projects to preserve and upgrade relics and Nam O fish sauce craft villages, contributing ideas for planning, renovating and restoring historical and cultural relics in Nam O; connects tourism businesses and travel agencies to build and exploit school tourism products and experiential activities in Nam O fish sauce craft villages.

Up to now, community tourism programs have been formed associated with local cultural life, Nam O fish sauce craft village associated with local cultural and historical relics; the Department of Science and Technology has "Building Nam O fish sauce craft village on the virtual reality platform VR360 Tour"; advising the city to register for protection, management and development of the geographical indication "Nam O" for Nam O fish sauce products of Da Nang...

Chairman of the Danang Hotel Association Nguyen Duc Quynh said that Nam O fish sauce is one of the typical products of the locality. Therefore, in the series of events "Vietnamese culinary culture journey" organized by Furama Danang Resort in collaboration with the Danang Hotel Association and the Danang Culinary Culture Association every quarter in 2024, Nam O fish sauce products will be displayed with the desire to introduce and promote the typical product of the locality to a large number of domestic and international tourists.

Mr. Bui Thanh Phu, owner of Nam O Huong Lang Co fish sauce business, said that with the attention of local authorities and the city, craftsmen have the opportunity to develop their brands, enhance their products, promote and attract tourists, and improve the lives of local people. However, in order to develop the scale of the craft village as well as attract a large number of tourists, especially large groups of visitors to study and visit the craft village, the business households want the city and locality to expand the seafront embankment so that large vehicles can carry passengers closer to the craft village instead of having to walk far as they do now.

According to Mr. Tran Cong Nguyen, in the period of 2025-2030, the district will focus on developing and expanding the scale of craft villages in the direction of stable and sustainable development of craft villages to ensure the goal of both developing craft villages and ensuring the livelihood of people in craft villages. At the same time, developing craft villages in the direction of diversifying products, especially focusing on product quality in the direction of both ensuring the quality of traditional products and meeting the needs and tastes of the market; promoting the implementation of tourist routes associated with Nam O fish sauce craft village; enhancing the promotion and introduction of craft village products to find and expand the product consumption market; managing and developing the geographical indication "Nam O" for Nam O fish sauce products of Da Nang city; accelerating the progress of forming tourist destinations, homestay tourism models to attract tourists to visit, travel...
