Mr Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian prime minister , has been NATO leader since 2014 and his term has been extended three times before. The 64-year-old is seen by many in NATO as a steadfast leader.

Mr Stoltenberg has led the North Atlantic Treaty Organization through a series of crises since taking office in 2014, most recently rallying NATO members to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Mr Stoltenberg said in February that he was not seeking an extension. But NATO members asked him to stay on after failing to agree on a successor.
Candidates once mentioned as possible successors to Mr Stoltenberg include British Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who has said publicly that he would like the job, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who has also said she is not suitable for the job.
