Through the inspection and review process, the Department of Cinema discovered that the content of the film "Huong Gio Ma Di" (39 episodes) shows the image of the illegal nine-dash line, violating the provisions of Vietnamese law.

Specifically, on the Netflix platform, the image of the nine-dash line appeared on the map in many scenes in episodes 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 38, especially clearly showing the nine-dash line from 2p0s to 2p3s of episode 30.

In addition, episode 18 of the film also includes dialogue and subtitles: "One day this map will go to many places in the world " from 41p18s-41p55s.

The Department of Cinema affirmed that the depiction of the nine-dash line and the content in the dialogue and subtitles as mentioned above in the film is incorrect, infringes on Vietnam's national sovereignty and violates the provisions of Point D, Clause 1, Article 9 of the 2022 Cinema Law. Therefore, the authorities have sent a request to Netflix to remove the film Huong Gio from the platform within 24 hours from 0:00 on July 10, 2023.

VietNamNet's records show that, as of 12 noon on July 10, Vietnamese users could still search and watch the content of the movie " Huong Gio Ma Di" on the Netflix platform. However, by 1 pm on the same day, the movie was no longer available on the platform.

When asked by VietNamNet, a Netflix spokesperson said: “Because some details in the episodes are prohibited under Vietnamese government regulations, Netflix has removed the series Huong Gio Ma Di from its platform in Vietnam. The series is still available on its platform in other countries.”

Previously, on the evening of July 9, upon receiving a document requesting the removal of the film "Huong Gio Ma Di" due to its incorrect content, violating national sovereignty and therefore not suitable for distribution in Vietnam, despite self-censorship and blurring the illegal nine-dash line image in the film, FPT Play immediately removed this content.

Sharing with VietNamNet, a digital content expert said that, in principle, after being copyrighted, foreign films will be censored and edited by domestic television platforms to comply with Vietnamese law.

“Compared to the general level, Chinese films often insert images of the nine-dash line into their content quite often. Therefore, domestic OTT television platforms often have to be more careful and thorough in the censorship and editing stages. This is also the reason why, of the two platforms mentioned by the Cinema Department, only the content on Netflix displays the illegal nine-dash line,” the expert shared.
