Reuters news agency reported that the Russian government 's announcement said that the decision to impose temporary restrictions on exports to the US was signed "on the president's instructions in response to restrictions and bans imposed by Washington", but that there would be exceptions.
According to the US nuclear agency, Russia holds about 44% of the world 's uranium enrichment capacity and about 35% of Washington's nuclear fuel imports previously came from Moscow.
However, Russia's decision is only a symbolic retaliation because since May, President Joe Biden signed into law a ban on imports of enriched uranium from Moscow, although Washington is also capable of issuing exemptions if there are concerns about supply.
