According to the Kyiv Independent, Kiev Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said the attack left one person dead and three injured.

The Ukrainian Air Force intercepted 88 UAVs, while 128 UAVs disappeared from radar. It is likely that these were used as decoys to overwhelm the air defense system. The Ukrainian air defense system coordinated electronic warfare units, mobile fire groups and anti-aircraft artillery systems.

According to Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat, the previous largest UAV attack during the special military operation took place on February 23, when 267 aircraft entered Ukrainian airspace.

Russia has not commented on the attack.

Earlier, on May 16, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul (Türkiye) took place for about 2 hours after a hiatus of more than 3 years. This was followed by a trilateral meeting between Türkiye, the US and Ukraine and a meeting between the head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, and the US side.

After the negotiations with Ukraine, Mr. Medinsky announced that the Russian side was satisfied with the results achieved and was ready to continue contacts. According to him, the parties agreed to exchange prisoners according to the formula "1,000 for 1,000". Mr. Medinsky also said that the Ukrainian side had requested direct negotiations between the leaders of the two countries and Russia had accepted to consider this request. He noted that Moscow and Kiev would present their vision of a possible ceasefire in the future and each side would write about it in detail. The head of the Russian delegation stated that after this event, Russia and Ukraine intend to continue the negotiation process.

The international community has positively evaluated the direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stephanie Tremblay said the UN welcomed the direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, saying that this event is an important step towards a sustainable peace in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on May 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky could meet if current negotiation efforts make progress and there are solid agreements.

According to Mr. Peskov, the meeting between the two leaders of Russia and Ukraine can only take place if the negotiations between the two sides produce results in the form of agreements. Mr. Peskov did not specify what agreements the Russian side hopes to reach, instead emphasizing that the key issue for Moscow remains the question of who is authorized by the Ukrainian government to sign the agreements, if any, after the negotiators agree on the content.
