On December 24, the Crisis Management Center of the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Russian cargo ship Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean after an explosion in the engine room.

On its Telegram channel, the center said: "Of the 16 crew members on board, 14 were rescued... 2 are missing. Teams from the Crisis Management Center, the Situation Center of the Ministry of Transport and Russian foreign missions are monitoring the situation."
Several vessels traveling in the same area joined the rescue operation, later the rescue ship Clara Campoamor and a Spanish Navy patrol boat also joined the search.
Ursa Major is a cargo ship built in 2009.
Reuters news agency reported that ship tracking data from LSEG (headquartered in the UK) showed that the ship departed from the Russian port of Saint Petersburg on December 11 and was last seen sending a signal on the evening of December 23 in the waters between Algeria and Spain.
According to official information, Ursa Major is on its way to Vladivostok, scheduled to arrive on January 22, 2025.
The ship's captain confirmed that the Ursa Major was carrying empty containers at the time of the accident.
