According to Mr. Mai Khac Trung Truc - Director of the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden Animal Enterprise, these white pheasants have been cared for at the Zoo for decades with two subspecies including Lophura nycthemera nycthemera and Lophura nycthemera annamensis . This is a species of the pheasant family, order of chickens, currently belonging to group IIB of endangered and rare forest animals.

When young, both male and female white pheasants have brown plumage with black or gray stripes. However, as they mature, the male begins to change its plumage to white. During the breeding season, which usually takes place at the beginning of the Lunar New Year, both male and female's plumage will become more beautiful to attract mates. Each clutch, the hen will lay about 8 - 9 eggs.

At the zoo, white pheasants are cared for in a separate area for birds and their numbers are strictly controlled. The separation of cages is also carefully calculated, absolutely not creating hybrids.

At the same time, avoid inbreeding which leads to gene degeneration, changes in phenotype, carries latent diseases and becomes a threat to gene sources if released back into the wild.
