Two technology giants Google and Palo Alto Networks are sounding the alarm about a hacker group called Scattered Spider turning its attention to the aviation industry.

In a statement posted on LinkedIn recently, Sam Rubin, an executive at Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42, said his company has "observed Muddled Libra (also known as Scattered Spider) targeting the aviation industry.

Similarly, Mr. Charles Carmakal, a director at Mandiant, a cybersecurity unit of Google, also said that the company noticed many incidents in the aviation and transportation industries that showed signs of activities of UNC3944 or Scattered Spider.

Neither executive specifically named the companies targeted, but U.S. carrier Hawaiian Airlines and Canada's WestJet have both recently reported unspecified cybersecurity incidents.

However, neither company has released details about the intrusions, or commented on any potential connection between the incidents and the Scattered Spider group.

Scattered Spider is a loosely structured but highly active hacker group, believed to include teenagers operating in Western countries.

The group is accused of being behind some of the most disruptive cyber attacks in the US and Europe in recent times.

In 2023, hackers associated with this group broke into two major entertainment corporations, MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, partially paralyzing the casinos' operations and causing slot machines to stop working.

Earlier this year, the group also caused chaos at retailers in the UK. Their more recent targets have included organisations in the US./.
