As of May 2025, Nghe An has a herd of 793,943 buffaloes and cows, a herd of 1,024,522 pigs and a herd of more than 37.8 million poultry.

Compared to the first months of the year, recently, the number of outbreaks of African swine fever has shown signs of increasing in localities such as Yen Thanh, Do Luong, Anh Son, Nghi Loc, Thanh Chuong...

According to the professional agency, with the current situation of small-scale livestock farming and the reasons such as the vaccination rate not reaching 80% of the total herd, the lack of strict control over animal transportation, especially the provision of breeding animals to projects that do not fully comply with regulations on disease prevention and control, and the lack of thorough slaughter control, the disease situation still has potential complications.

In addition, there are still cases of people hiding the epidemic and "selling" animals suspected of being infected. The process of destroying infected animals is still incorrect or not completely destroying infected or suspected animals. Free-ranging dogs and cats are still common and not strictly managed.
The trading and use of vaccines at veterinary medicine businesses, livestock farms and households have not been closely inspected and monitored. The complicated weather has reduced the resistance of livestock, so the risk of African swine fever, foot and mouth disease, rabies, avian influenza and other dangerous livestock diseases arising and spreading in the coming time is very high.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De said that the disease situation in livestock is complicated, especially in some communes of Con Cuong and Que Phong districts. Therefore, the provincial leaders requested localities to pay attention to propaganda work on mass media so that people can raise their sense of responsibility in disease prevention and control.
Localities need to promptly detect disease outbreaks to have timely solutions; pay special attention to the situation of dumping dead pigs in canals, especially the Dao River system through Do Luong and Yen Thanh districts.
When an epidemic occurs, districts, towns and cities direct communes to effectively implement disease prevention and control solutions; at the same time, carry out statistical work well to have a basis for supporting people.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment needs to proactively advise the Provincial People's Committee to promptly supply vaccines and other materials to serve the work of disease prevention and control for livestock in the province.
