Poisoning from eating belladonna, 5 people hospitalized for emergency care

The Central Highlands General Hospital said it is currently receiving and treating five patients in Ea Sup district who were poisoned by eating belladonna.

All patients are relatives of a Dao family, residing in sub-region 295, Cu M'Lan commune, Ea Sup district.

According to information from the patient's family, on the afternoon of August 21, patients: SML (born in 1966), PVP (born in 2003), PVP (born in 2015), PTT (born in 2016), PVQ (born in 2019) ate belladonna together. About 30 minutes after eating, they developed a fever and convulsions, so they were taken to the emergency room at Ea Sup District Medical Center, then transferred to the Central Highlands General Hospital for further treatment.

After being actively treated by doctors, the patients are now awake and able to communicate, except for patient PVP (born in 2015) who is lethargic and slow to communicate.

According to doctors' recommendations, belladonna is a group A poisonous plant, its whole body contains many types of toxins, the Ministry of Health recommends not to plant it in homes and public places. Belladonna is often planted or grows wild everywhere, belladonna poisoning is also common due to eating by mistake, or mistakenly processing belladonna flowers and leaves into food.

In Oriental medicine, belladonna is used as a medicine to treat a number of diseases such as cough, asthma, pain relief, anticonvulsant, rheumatism... However, the recommended use is very strict, must have a doctor's prescription. In case of overdose, the toxicity will immediately affect the central nervous system, mild dizziness, hallucinations, severe paralysis, even death.
