Ngo Thanh Van asks for Vietnamese dialogue in Hollywood movies

Actress Ngo Thanh Van proactively asked the director of "The Creator" - a blockbuster about AI - to let her robot character speak Vietnamese.

She plays Kami, a mercenary robot, in The Creator. The film takes place in the future, when war between humans and AI (artificial intelligence) breaks out, and is set in many Asian countries. Ngo Thanh Van's role has many bilingual scenes in English and Vietnamese.

The "action woman" said that when participating in the project, she discussed with director Gareth Edwards many details revolving around the language of the characters in the film. She suggested that the robot Kami have more scenes speaking Vietnamese to show regional characteristics.

"The Vietnamese lines in the film were added by me after the director's approval. Gareth respects the actors' creativity and allows them to freely express their roles within the scope of their characters," Ngo Thanh Van said. Currently, the scenes in which Ngo Thanh Van speaks Vietnamese have not been revealed by the Hollywood crew.

The inspiration for the actress to transform into her new role was Michelle Yeoh - the star who played with her in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 (2016). The "action actress" was impressed by Michelle Yeoh's quote - "Don't let anyone say you're out of date" - when she received the Oscar in March. "I realized that acting has no age or limit, it all depends on perseverance and effort," she said.

Ngo Thanh Van is 44 years old, settled in Norway since childhood. In 1999, she returned to Vietnam and started her artistic career. In the 2000s, she made her mark with the films Heroic Bloodline (directed by Charlie Nguyen), Dragon Trap (directed by Le Thanh Son). Since 2015, Ngo Thanh Van has ventured into film production and has been involved with it until now, with the works Once Upon a Time Today, Tam Cam - The Untold Story, Co Ba Sai Gon, and Hai Phuong.

She has appeared in Hollywood films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, Bright, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Da 5 Bloods with the stage name Veronica.
