Since January 6, the year of the Dragon, anchovies have appeared densely in the coastal waters of Quang Ngai province, so many boat owners have returned from a night of fishing with a catch of 5 - 10 tons, with prices at the port ranging from 15 - 40 thousand VND/kg.
Thanks to good harvest and good prices, many boats continuously go out to sea to fish.
Since the beginning of the year, fishermen in Tinh Ky commune have caught more than 4,000 tons of anchovies, with an average price of 15,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, many boat owners have earned hundreds of millions of VND overnight.
Thanks to the good fishing season and the high price of anchovies, many local workers have jobs. Ms. Nguyen Thi Cuc, in An Vinh village, Tinh Ky commune, said that in her 15 years of trading fish, there have been few years like this year, with abundant fish and good prices, so trading is easy. On average, I transport about 100kg of fish to different places every day, earning a profit of more than 500,000 VND.
Services providing gasoline, ice, food, drinking water... are also bustling. Fish steamers in Tinh Ky operate day and night. Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, owner of a fish steaming facility in Tinh Ky commune, said that for over a month, the fish steamer has steamed 3-4 tons of fish every day, sometimes steaming more than 8 tons. To steam anchovies until crispy, keeping the freshness of the fish and the salty taste of the sea requires many steps from pre-processing to steaming, so it requires a lot of labor.
Mr. Tung's fish steaming facility currently provides jobs for 12 workers, each worker is paid from 250 - 300 thousand VND/day.
Chairman of Tinh Ky Commune People's Committee Nguyen Hoai Thanh said that the anchovy steaming profession in the commune has existed for a long time. The profession depends on the sea season, but is busiest from January to March of the lunar calendar when the anchovy season is in full swing.
The whole commune has 8 fish steaming facilities, each facility creates jobs for dozens of local workers. After processing the fish, the anchovy products are sold to other places and exported to China.
Therefore, to ensure food hygiene and safety, and maintain the Tinh Ky dried anchovy brand, the commune has promoted and advised fish processing facilities not to use chemicals in the process of steaming fish, and trained fish steaming facility owners on business regulations in the fish processing industry.
