The victory helped Hai Phong extend their unbeaten streak to five matches. Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem and his team's most recent defeat was against Hanoi on April 13. On the contrary, after two draws against Thanh Hoa and Da Nang, and a win against Hanoi , HAGL suffered their first defeat since losing to SLNA on April 15.
Viet Hung grew up at HAGL's training center but was loaned to Hai Phong. He broke the tie in the 63rd minute, creating the premise for Hai Phong to score another goal in extra time, thanks to Josephn Mpande. After scoring, the 25-year-old midfielder signaled not to celebrate.
Viet Hung has been with HAGL since he was 11 years old. Unable to compete for a starting position at HAGL, he was loaned to Hai Phong and became a mainstay, helping the Lach Tray team win the 2022 V-League runner-up. The port city team then expressed their desire to buy Viet Hung back, but HAGL refused, only lending him for another season. His performance in this match will certainly strengthen Hai Phong's determination to sign him long-term.

Before opening the score, Viet Hung made his mark on the home team's play. From his corner kick, Carlos Herrera hit the post. Then, Viet Hung continued to cross for Dang Van Toi to send the ball across the visitors' goal. The 25-year-old midfielder also helped Hai Phong's midfield dominate the opponent, thereby taking the initiative. If Mpande or Hai Huy had finished better, Hai Phong could have scored early.
Coach Kiatisuk's players had a tough match against the home team's aggressive pressing style. But HAGL were not without opportunities. In the 17th minute, two foreign players from the away team coordinated, opening up a one-on-one opportunity for Paollo Oliveira. But the Brazilian striker's tight-angle shot could not beat goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu.
After conceding the goal, HAGL tried to regain control of the game but could not penetrate the opponent's defense. Adjustments from coach Kiatisuk were also ineffective. Raising the squad, the away team conceded a second goal in the final minutes, thereby accepting their second defeat this season.
In the next round, Hai Phong will host Da Nang on June 24 and HAGL will host Ho Chi Minh City a day later.
