Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien speaks at the launch ceremony of the book "Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan, memories and reminiscences".

He was the one who initiated the program to develop hybrid rice and sugarcane in Vietnam; to livestock, such as super lean pigs, ostriches, Luong Phuong chickens, Tam Hoang chickens, Egyptian chickens, French pigeons, dairy cows; or other fields such as forestry, aquaculture, irrigation... Each field is a revolution associated with the intelligence and enthusiasm of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Nguyen Cong Tan. The rare plant varieties, livestock, and genetic resources... that he brought to Vietnam have become a strong development resource in agricultural production, contributing greatly to solving the problem of food and foodstuffs, creating agricultural achievements today.

As Deputy Prime Minister and head of the agricultural sector, he has actively directed the promulgation and implementation of many important policies, helping farmers to have easier access to capital sources, science and technology and markets; promoting linkages to create a closed supply chain, from production, processing to consumption of agricultural products; encouraging farmers and businesses to invest in research and apply new technologies to increase productivity and quality of agricultural products.

“The vast majority of delegates present today have experienced the subsidy period, there were times when 2 million tons of food were imported, but that situation no longer exists today… Mr. Nguyen Cong Tan’s contributions have helped create a new look for Vietnamese agriculture, while improving the lives of tens of millions of farmers across the country. Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan will forever be remembered as a leader who devoted himself to farmers, leaving a deep mark in the history of Vietnam’s agricultural development,” said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien emotionally.

Throughout his career, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan was not only a talented leader but also a person with a profound vision for agriculture. His contributions have helped Vietnam's agriculture develop remarkably.

Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat - Editor of the book shared: "He always had a burning desire to promote the progress of agriculture, thereby helping the poor and the country. His concerns were relentless until his last days on earth. His passion, concerns, and efforts attracted and motivated us to follow him. His style became the way of life and work of many people around him, constantly striving, constantly exploring."

Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that with his contributions to the agricultural sector, the late Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister Nguyen Cong Tan was the one who laid the important foundation for the current agricultural restructuring.

Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat - Editor-in-Chief of the book spoke at the book launch ceremony about Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan.

On behalf of his family, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, son of the late Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan, thanked the book's editorial board; the delegates are leaders, former leaders, scholars, scientists, and researchers dedicated to the agricultural sector. “The book is not an opportunity to honor an individual but to honor a collective, students, colleagues, and friends who have been close to my father and the agricultural sector. During the 10-month journey of making the book, I had the opportunity to meet people, to hear stories about my father that were sincere, profound, and simple... making me feel like my father was present like yesterday in every little bit, every little bit...

The book is not only a documentary work but also a process of dedication of a leader, a politician, a scientist and also about a loved one in the family that we are very proud of. My father's life is a dedication to the country, to the revolution, an exemplary father who always guides his children.

Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that the late Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister Nguyen Cong Tan was the one who laid the important foundation for the current agricultural restructuring.

“My mother joked that among the relatives who came to the family, my father was the least handsome; but the older he got, the more handsome he became. We call this “the mind creates the appearance”. The older he got, the more he gathered his heart, kindness, tolerance… so he became more handsome.

The book is not only a memory, it will inspire the next generations in the agricultural and rural sectors; as a bridge between generations…”.

Pausing because of emotion, Mr. Tien continued: “From the first floor to the second floor, there are displayed products associated with his direction, from plant varieties, livestock; regional products… My father is really not perfect. He has typical bad habits such as smoking. In the past, when my father studied at the South China Agricultural and Forestry Academy – a place that imparted a lot of knowledge not only about agriculture but also about music, art…, but that was also where he learned to smoke.

Page 261 of the book has a photo of my father with the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet. Behind the photo, behind him, there is a faint white vapor, that is cigarette smoke.... But for our family, my father's imperfections have been increasingly perfected by the next generation. The country's agricultural sector is increasingly developing, that is the sediment, accumulated from previous generations, not an achievement achieved overnight.

"The book will be like a message to the next generation to take the agricultural sector further, so that my father can have moments of relaxation like the times he listened to the Moonlight Sonata when he was alive," said Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, son of the late Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan.

At the end of the event, Mr. Cao Duc Phat and the family of the late Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan presented books to delegates attending the event.
