World Cup hero chooses overseas Vietnamese star for Vietnam women's team?

Coach Mai Duc Chung had a conversation with Chelsea Le and this Vietnamese-American player will most likely be called up to the Vietnam women's team in the near future.

On March 28, Chelsea Le and the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club won a resounding 5-0 victory over Son La in the opening match of Group A of the 2025 National Cup.

Chelsea Le longs to wear the Vietnamese women's team jersey.

Although this was her debut match in the Vietnamese professional league system, she showed confidence and made her mark with a goal that raised the score to 4-0 for the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club.

Before that, she also made her debut for Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club in the quarter-finals of the 2024-2025 Asian Women's Cup C1.

In this match, Chelsea Le played impressively and contributed to helping Vietnam's number 1 women's team defeat Abu Dhabi Country Club to enter the semi-finals.

Notably, during the training session of the Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club, Coach Mai Duc Chung met and talked with Chelsea Le.

Although the content of the conversation is unknown, many opinions say that it is very likely that coach Mai Duc Chung will open the door for this overseas Vietnamese star to contribute to the Vietnamese women's team.

For her part, the star born in 2001 said she is in the process of naturalization and is eager to play for the Vietnamese women's national team.

“I really want to play for the Vietnamese women’s team. That is my aspiration. I don’t have Vietnamese citizenship yet, but everyone is trying to help me speed up the process. I still have paperwork issues, but maybe everything will be resolved soon.

When I said I wanted to play in Vietnam, my whole family supported me. I also have a younger sister who is a student player and will also be oriented to play for the Vietnamese women's team," Chelsea Le shared.

Chelsea Le is a Vietnamese American whose grandparents still hold Vietnamese citizenship and frequently travel between the two countries. Therefore, she may soon obtain Vietnamese citizenship.
