Despite being affected by the incident, Semenyo still scored two goals for Bournemouth. |
The opening match of the 2025/26 Premier League season between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield on the morning of August 16 was overshadowed by an embarrassing incident. In the 28th minute, as Antoine Semenyo was preparing to take a throw-in, the Bournemouth striker was suddenly racially abused by a Liverpool fan.
According to a statement from Merseyside Police, the 47-year-old man was taken to a police station for questioning on suspicion of public order and racially-motivated offences. According to The Athletic , the investigation could result in a permanent ban and criminal charges against the man.
Merseyside Police Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton stressed: “Merseyside Police has zero tolerance for any form of racist crime. We take incidents such as this very seriously and will actively work with the club to seek a stadium ban for those responsible.”
He also urged fans to report similar behaviour to stadium staff or the police immediately. For his part, Semenyo also spoke out on his personal page, expressing gratitude for the support from his teammates and the football community: “The night at Anfield will stay with me forever - not because of the words of one individual, but because of the way the whole football family came together.”
