Foreigners scammed change in HCMC, restaurant owner is worried

Recently, a clip appeared on social networks warning about the scams of foreigners at restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the owner of the clip, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, the incident happened at 3:00 p.m. on May 13 at his sticky rice shop on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street (District 1, HCMC).

At the time of the incident, Mr. Long’s shop was empty. A foreign man came to the shop to buy 2 bottles of water. He gave the staff a 500,000 VND bill, and the staff gave him 470,000 VND in change.

However, the man started speaking in a foreign language, seemingly not wanting to buy anymore. Seeing the employee confused, he changed his mind and bought another bottle of water, pretending to put a 500,000 VND bill in the employee's hand, but quickly put it back on the phone.

At this point, the man pretended to have given the employee 500,000 VND and asked for 470,000 VND in change. The employee was confused, thinking he had already received the customer's money, so he agreed to do as the man said.

In the end, the female employee lost 470,000 VND and 3 bottles of water. When the foreign man discovered the incident, he also left.

"One of the three branches of the store encountered a similar case. Although I warned them, my staff was once again deceived by this trick. I am very upset and want to post on social media to warn other stores," said Mr. Long.

Mr. Long said that to help other employees be more vigilant and careful, the female employee in the clip had to compensate for the money she was scammed. However, the owner of the restaurant will also find a way to reward this employee at the end of the month as a consolation.

"When I posted this clip online, many other shop owners also texted me to say they were also scammed with the same trick," Mr. Long shared.
